Tulane Sociology Fall Colloquium Series presents Professor Michael A. McCarthy with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Marquette University

Much of the progressive political debate about financial reform focuses on breaking up banks that are "too big to fail" and reinstating Glass-Steagall. This view, popularized by Bernie Sanders in the 2016 election, calls for weakening the concentrated power of finance. But Professor McCarthy's presentation will turn Bernie on his head - finance should not be broken up, he argues, rather it should be controlled. This talk explores past experiments in the U.S., Western Europe, and Scandinavia geared toward democratizing large profit-oriented financial institutions and redirecting financial flows toward the social good, exploring their successes and failures.
