Altman Program Summer Internship Award

The Altman Program is committed to providing equitable opportunities for professional growth for students pursuing careers outside of the traditional world of business. The Altman Program Summer Internship Award (max $3000) provides financial support to rising junior and senior Altman Scholars who are participating in unpaid and underpaid summer internships with relevance to their liberal arts major and that support their broader intellectual and professional goals.

Unpaid internships are eligible for up to $3,000.  Underpaid internships are eligible for partial funding.  Underpaid internships include internships for which the student is being compensated less than $15/hour.  Internships with a slightly higher rate of compensation that are based in locations with a higher cost of living may also be eligible for funding.

Budget worksheets should account for out of pocket living expenses incurred during the internship.  Lost wages and compensation for residency with family members are not reimbursable.

Recipients of these awards are required to participate in the NTC Research and Ideas Symposium during the fall semester after their internship experience.  They will also be enrolled in a 1 credit course.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis in the spring.  Students may apply for funding for internships that have not been confirmed, but for which they are in the final stages of interviews (funding dependent on confirmation of internship).  Funds are limited, therefore early application is encouraged.

How to submit your application

Students should apply at the link below.  The application requires a 250 word statement of purpose and a detailed budget worksheet.

Altman Undergraduate Summer Research Award

Application Overview

The Altman Program is committed to enhancing opportunities for undergraduate research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Open to rising juniors and seniors, the Altman Undergraduate Summer Research Award offers students the opportunity to engage in a research project under the mentorship of a faculty member.  The research experience should align with their broader academic or professional goals. Special consideration is given to those projects that contribute to an honors thesis project or 3 credit independent study.

Students will present the findings of their research at the NTC Research and Ideas Symposium in the fall semester after their research experience.  They will also be enrolled in a 1 credit course.  Finally, award recipients are required to write a summary of their research project for use on the Altman website or other forum.

Student funding: Approved candidates will receive a stipend of $2,000.  Students whose progress is deemed unacceptable by the mentor and/or who fail to present their research at the NTC Research and Ideas Symposium will not be eligible for their stipend in the following academic year.

Faculty stipend: Faculty mentors receive a $500 stipend. They are required to send a brief memo to altman@tulane.edu confirming that they are willing to mentor the project. Faculty mentors should meet at least three times with their mentees: prior to the launch of summer research, at least once during the student’s research experience (remote meeting is okay), and again at the end of the summer. Faculty should be available throughout the experience to provide ongoing guidance to students.

The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study-abroad population.

Identity-Based Resources
While every prospective study abroad student weighs a number of factors when preparing to live in a new and unfamiliar country, underrepresented student groups must ask themselves a unique set of questions when considering what external factors may impact their overall experience and safety abroad. Students should have equal access to study abroad regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, financial background, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Studying abroad can be not only a life-changing educational experience, it can also present an opportunity to further awareness and acceptance of your community on a global scale. Our goal is to provide all students with the resources required to facilitate the safest and most fulfilling international education experience possible.
